After deadly 110 mph crash, teen gets 3.5-15 years

Last spring, a teenager in Michigan was driving at around 110 miles per hour when his car went off the road and collided with a tree. The wreck happened at about 3:42 a.m.

He was 17 at the time -- he is 18 now -- and he had four high school girls in the car with him. He had apparently picked them up at a party and was supposed to be taking them home. One of them, a 16-year-old who went to Sparta High School, was killed; she initially survived and then passed away from her injuries. One of the other girls had a portion of her leg amputated and all had fractures and broken bones, putting them in critical condition.

The teen has now been sentenced. The judge referred to the event as a tragedy and gave him anywhere from 3.5 years to 15 years behind bars.

The young girl who passed away broke her neck in the accident. The driver himself was also in critical condition, trapped in the mangled vehicle. He was taken to a medical center and survived.

Police were surprised that anyone pulled through. One officer commented that the wreck was so bad he could barely believe all five people hadn't been killed.

Since the driver was just 17, he was on a restricted license saying he needed a licensed adult to be with him. That person had to be at least 21. So, not only did he break the speed limit and cause the accident, but he began by violating the terms of the license.

A tragic accident like this can leave families searching for answers and people with life-altering injuries. When that happens, it's important for those impacted to know if they have a right to compensation.
