Parents who owe child support should pay

The ideal for St. Clair Shores, Michigan, families is for their children to be raised by both of their parents in a happy, healthy home. Some children are fortunate enough to have that, but others experience situations in which their parents divorce. In those cases, both child custody and child support need to be addressed. Although many noncustodial parents pay the child support they are ordered to on a regular and timely basis, some do not.

One father reportedly owes almost $300,000 in back child support. The money is intended to go to his children's and ex-wife's living expenses. However, the man says that he does not have the money to pay it.

Oakland County Circuit Court records indicate that the father, 53, hasn't paid any of the child support that he was ordered to upon being divorced in 2013. His payments are supposed to be $9,100 per month. He is currently in Florida, which complicates efforts of Michigan officials to communicate with him in person about the matter.

The father once owned a profitable metals and jewelry business. He has multiple outstanding bench warrants based on failing to show up for court. He doesn't appear to be inclined to go to court any time soon, despite the necessity of doing so to pursue his requested reduction in payment obligations. Although his is an extreme case, there are certainly other noncustodial parents in Michigan who are overdue on the child support payments that they were ordered to make.

However, the director of Oakland County's Friend of the Court office says that most people, despite stereotypes to the contrary, do pay all of their child support obligations each month. She also said that her office has a commitment to help parents who owe child support, connecting them with job placement assistance and addressing special needs. The director said that the most important thing, however, is for parents with child support obligations to get in touch with her office as expediently as they can.
