Child custody, the holidays and avoiding an argument

Even though the holiday season is still a couple of months away, there's no better time than now to turn your attention to co-parenting during this time of the year.

It doesn't matter if you have physical custody of your children or visitation rights, you must work closely with your ex-spouse to ensure an enjoyable holiday season for all.

Here are a few tips you can follow to avoid a child custody dispute during the holidays:

  • Start early: The earlier you discuss your plans, the better chance you have of avoiding trouble. Once you both agree to a schedule, do whatever it takes to stick with it. Asking to make changes at a later date can complicate things.
  • Be respectful of your ex's time with your children: Yes, you want to spend as much time as possible with your children during the holidays. However, don't be greedy at the expense of your ex-spouse. It's important for your children to spend time with both of you.
  • Don't look for an argument: Even if you're not on speaking terms with your ex, the holidays are all about peace and love. Rather than look for an argument, find ways to get along.

As the holidays get closer and closer, continue to discuss plans with your ex-spouse and your children. If you run into any issues along the way, review your parenting plan and visitation agreement for guidance. This is typically all it takes to get on the same page. If that doesn't work, learn more about your legal rights, such as requesting a modification to your agreement.
