Post-accident concussion treatment

A car accident has the potential to cause many types of injuries, with a concussion one of the most common. Even a minor blow to the head can cause a concussion, resulting in a variety of symptoms that can impact your life.

If you have any reason to suspect a concussion, seek immediate medical treatment following your accident. Your medical team can run a variety of tests, such as a neurological exam and MRI, to determine the severity of your concussion.

Concussion symptoms don't always present right away but could instead take up to 24 hours to affect you.

Treatment typically entails the following:

  • Physical and mental rest as to give your brain time to make a full recovery
  • Avoiding activities that could result in a blow to the head, such as operating a motor vehicle or sports
  • Reduction in activities that require mental concentration, such as schoolwork, playing video games and texting
  • Medication for pain, such as headaches

As the days pass, you'll stay in touch with your doctor to update them on your progress and adjust your recovery schedule accordingly.

You'll gradually add normal activities back into your daily life until you feel confident in your ability to resume your pre-accident schedule.

Shortly after receiving treatment, file a claim with your insurance agent. While it's important to provide them with the basics regarding your accident, don't share too much information without first understanding your legal rights.

Depending on the circumstances of the accident, you may find yourself in a position to seek compensation from the negligent party.
