Do you understand the 3 categories of distracted driving?

There are many different types of distracted driving, ranging from talking on the phone to texting to eating and drinking behind the wheel.

Every type of distracted driving falls into one or more of these categories:

  • Manual distraction: This is when you take one or both hands off the wheel. You answer the phone, send a text message or maybe pick up a coffee cup. Without one or both hands on the wheel, there's a greater chance of causing an accident should you need to adjust your course or make a quick decision.
  • Cognitive distraction: This is when you're not focused on the task at hand, but instead thinking about something else. Common examples include talking to a passenger or thinking about something that's happening at work or at home.
  • Visual distraction: There are many visual distractions that can take your attention away from the road ahead and the dangers around you. Maybe you're adjusting the radio station or navigation controls. Or maybe you turn around to see what your children are doing in the back seat. When your eyes aren't on the road, there's a greater chance of causing an accident.

Understanding the three primary categories of distracted driving will help you avoid getting into a wreck.

If a distracted driver causes an accident by running a red light and striking your vehicle in an intersection, stay where you are and call 911 for help.

Once you receive treatment, collect evidence to back up your version of events, then file an insurance claim and do your part in seeking and recovering compensation for your injuries and other damages.
