Use virtual visitation to your advantage after divorce

Your post-divorce life, especially as it pertains to raising your children, is sure to be different than what you're used to.

If you have visitation rights, it's critical to make the most of the time you spend together with your children. When you're not physically in the same location, you may want to look into the many benefits of virtual visitation:

  • Opportunity to see your child's face, such as before bedtime or after winning an award
  • Ability to help your children with homework
  • Streamlined and efficient way to have daily conversations, such as in the morning or before going to bed
  • Opportunity to witness events live, such as recitals and sports games

The most important thing you can do in regards to virtual visitation is get on the same page as your ex. It's a good idea to discuss this when creating your parenting plan and visitation agreement, as you can work out the finer details and put them in writing.

As you get started with virtual visitation, pay close attention to:

  • The type of technology that works best for you and your children
  • The times of the day when it's best to use this form of communication
  • How to use technology to spend more time together

While there are many benefits of virtual visitation, don't use it to replace face-to-face visits.

If you're doing your best to spend time with your children but your ex is making it difficult, talk about your concerns and learn more about your legal rights. You don't want to miss out on this important part of your children's' lives.
