Are you asking for a divorce? Avoid these details for now

As you prepare to ask your spouse for a divorce, you'll realize that your life will never be the same after you split.

Even if it's for the better, you're likely to have questions and concerns regarding the impact of your divorce on your personal life, finances and any children you have together.

Once you lay out your feelings and the conversation is in full swing, it will begin to take many twists and turns. While it's okay to discuss the basics of divorce, don't discuss the finer details. Here are the types of things you should avoid for the time being:

  • Property and debt division: You're unlikely to see eye-to-eye regarding property and debt division. Bringing it up now could result in a serious argument. For example, both of you may want to remain living in the family home.
  • Child custody: Even more so than property division, child custody matters have the potential to complicate your divorce. The last thing you want to do is put your children in the middle of your split.
  • Child support and alimony: Still other financially-related concerns, both of these have the potential to be sticking points in your divorce.

You know you have to work through these details and endure potential disagreements at some point, but you'll have time in the future. Trying to discuss such important matters when you just asked for a divorce can only worsen an emotionally fraught situation.

Once things have settled down, learn more about your legal rights, the divorce process and your primary goals from any settlement agreement or judgment.
