Surgery may be necessary after a traumatic brain injury

A traumatic brain injury can result from a motor vehicle crash, slip and fall, fall from height or many other types of accident.

If you suspect a traumatic brain injury, receiving immediate medical care should be your top priority. Your doctor will examine you and run a variety of tests, such as an MRI and CT scan, to better understand your injury and the type of treatment you require.

It's not always necessary, but there are times when surgery is required to stabilize a traumatic brain injury. This is typical in the following cases:

  • Skull fracture: Surgery is often necessary to repair a skull fracture, such as if a piece of bone is stuck in the brain.
  • To remove a blood clot: Bleeding within the brain can lead to a blood clot. This can cause a variety of health concerns, such as a stroke and permanent brain damage.
  • Bleeding in the brain: Any bleeding in the brain is dangerous, and the best way of stopping it is through a surgical procedure.

Some traumatic brain injuries result in immediate symptoms, but this doesn't always happen. For example, bleeding in the brain may not result in symptoms until several hours after the accident.

Once you receive treatment for your brain injury and understand what comes next, learn more about the cause of the accident, who was at fault and the steps you can take to obtain compensation from the responsible party.

Any type of brain injury is serious, but it doesn't mean your life is over. With the help of your medical team, you can begin the journey toward making a recovery.
