How to mentally prepare for the divorce process

With the divorce process closing in on you, it's easy to turn all your attention to matters regarding debt and property division, child custody, child support, spousal support and other related details.

But there's something you may be overlooking: Your mental preparation.

If you don't mentally prepare for the divorce process, you could eventually wear yourself down to the point of exhaustion.

Here are some tips for mentally preparing yourself for divorce:

  • Commit to the process: This isn't a time to second guess yourself or wonder if you could have done something differently in your marriage. You're moving forward with divorce, so you should be 100 percent committed.
  • Come to grips with the fact that some days are better than others: There will be days when you feel good about your divorce and the way things are progressing. Conversely, there will be days when you feel down and wonder what the future will bring. Prepare for this.
  • Form a support group: Even if you're a private person, you need someone to talk to during and after your divorce. Your support group can be made up of many people, such as family, friends and coworkers. You may also want to consider the benefits of consulting with a professional therapist or counselor.

When you mentally prepare for the divorce process, you'll find it much easier to keep your head down and make informed decisions along the way.

Once your divorce is in the past, you can then turn your full attention to living a better life in the future. Remember this: Better things are to come!
